Once upon a time, when I was in trouble for fighting my own battles after being stamped on for so many years, I met a man who changed my persepective on everything. He was a Holocaust survivor who taught me many aspects of human nature that had intrigued me for years and he did so with great humour and generous spirit. He taught me to see people through the relevance of their life experience and I could do it without having to sacrifice mercy. You don't have to forgive to understand but understanding can help you heal and move forward. If someone who survived Auschwitz can do that then I had a fantastic chance of doing the same. Another thing he told me about was the three different types of Allied soldier he came across after liberation. "The Russians said we were free and left us to starve again. The British said we were free and helped us stand tall again. The Americans said we were free and helped us laugh again. The British men I hold dear in my heart but the Americans were so alive and vigourous they reminded us that we were the same. That can be a greater gift than food."

It’s amazing how much influence the story of the Men of Easy Company has on people. Reading the book or after seeing the miniseries gave many people inspiration to achieve their goals. For others the story even gave the strength to carry on when they were going through difficulties in life.

"Blood on the Risers" is an old American paratrooper song from World War II. The song was sung by both the United States 82nd Airborne Division and the United States 101st Airborne Division. This song has been featured on the television mineseries Band of Brothers and is on the video game Brothers in Arms. This song was sung to the tune of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". This song tells of the final jump of a paratrooper and how his parachute does not work. This results in him falling to his death. |
